Brewing coffee in your plunger
A few simple steps to making sure you get the best out of your plunger coffee.
You will need:
- A plunger
- Ground (coarse) coffee beans
- A teaspoon

A coarse ground will look somewhat chunky. Because the coffee is steeped in boiling water, the contact time between the water and coffee is much longer, which requires a coarser grind.
Now, brewing:
- Boil your kettle and boiled water to your plunger, plunge a few times, and then discard the water. This will clean and heat the plunger.
- Add 2 teaspoons (approx. 10 grammes) of ground coffee beans.
- Pour hot water (ideally around 93-95 Celsius) slowly and evenly over the grounds. The coffee will form a cap on the top, and bubbles will form as the aromatic oils & gases are released.
- Stir the coffee a few times with a spoon, to maximise contact between the water and coffee and to release as much flavour as possible.
- Allow the coffee to brew for 3-4 minutes, then plunge & serve immediately.
- Enjoy your coffee!
